Terms of Service

Last updated: April 20, 2026

1. Acceptance

By accessing or using the districtapi.dev API, developer portal, or any associated services ("Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. The Service

districtapi.dev provides programmatic access to US school district and school data sourced from publicly available federal datasets (NCES Common Core of Data, NCES EDGE, and Census TIGER). The Service normalizes and serves this data via a REST API.

3. API Keys

Access to the API requires an API key issued through your account. You are responsible for keeping your API key confidential. Do not share keys across multiple users or organizations — each developer or application should use its own key. You are responsible for all usage associated with your key.

If you believe your key has been compromised, delete it and generate a new one immediately from your dashboard.

4. Acceptable Use

You may use the Service to build applications, conduct research, or integrate school district data into your products. You may not:

  • Resell or sublicense raw API responses as a competing data product
  • Use the Service to scrape or bulk-export entire datasets for redistribution
  • Attempt to circumvent rate limits or access controls
  • Use the Service in any way that violates applicable law
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service or its infrastructure

5. Rate Limits and Quotas

Each plan includes a monthly request quota. Requests that exceed the monthly limit will be rejected with a 402 error on the free tier, or billed as overage on paid tiers at the rate shown on the pricing page. Monthly quotas reset on the first day of each calendar month.

6. Data Accuracy

All data is sourced from federal government datasets and is provided as-is. districtapi.dev makes no guarantees about the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of the data. Data is updated annually following NCES release cycles. Do not rely solely on this data for decisions with significant legal or financial consequences.

7. Service Availability

We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. The Service may be modified, suspended, or discontinued at any time. We will make reasonable efforts to communicate planned downtime in advance.

8. Billing and Cancellation

Paid subscriptions are billed monthly. You may cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period. No refunds are issued for partial months. The free tier is available indefinitely with no credit card required.

9. Termination

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, abuse the Service, or engage in fraudulent activity. You may delete your account at any time by contacting hello@districtapi.dev.

10. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

11. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, DISTRICTAPI.DEV SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID IN THE TWELVE MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. Material changes will be communicated via email.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law provisions.
